I am going to show you how I wash my laundry with a proven non toxic and very effective way of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing your wash without using chemicals, synthetics, fragrances and toxic fabric softeners.

We all have a never ending supply of laundry to do every week. It’s a non stop weekly chore and most of us are using very toxic soaps, fabric softeners and poisoning ourselves and our families without knowing it.

Laundry soaps and fabric softeners are one of the most common household booby traps, and most of us do not see the super toxicity in our laundry methods. Laundry, if not washed correctly without the use of toxic detergents and chemical fabric softeners, could be giving your family allergies, hormone imbalances, accumulated toxicity of very harsh chemicals, skin rashes and many more possible health related negative effects.

Every week I clean and disinfect my laundry and have learned over the years how to replace all of the commonly used toxic synthetic cleaning ingredients, using simple over the counter natural detergents and non toxic fabric softeners.

These recipes and protocols I am going to show you is the way I clean and disinfect all of my laundry, and remove all of the bacteria, grease and stains with all natural substances, minimizing the toxicity effect of cleaning our clothes.

Toxic Laundry Detergents

Mostly all of the scented laundry detergents, fabric softeners and kitchen soaps we use are very toxic with their fake chemical synthetic perfumes, and toxic chemicals that clean our clothes.

Most of the chemicals that are in these laundry soaps leave residue in our clothes, and have the capacity to transfer some of these toxic chemicals into our bodies from touching, wearing, sleeping on our bed sheets, using pillow cases, children’s clothes, etc.

Many of the soap manufacturers in the detergent industry do not include all the toxic synthetic chemicals in their formulas on their labels. Most people have no idea what chemicals or formulated poisons are lurking in their detergent and dish soap, that can contain cancer causing chemicals and toxins.

Doing my research on toxic laundry detergents show that at least 80% of the laundry detergents are produced with known hazardous ingredients. Both liquid and powdered toxic laundry detergents can cause cancer, eye irritation, kidney, liver, skin, respiratory problems and a variety of other physiological dysfunctions.

When we wash our laundry with these types of toxic, chemical laundry detergents, we inhale and wear these toxins. Also, in the laundry process, these toxins become airborne, poisoning everyone who breathe these harsh cleaning and fragrant chemicals.

12 Toxic Chemicals Commonly Found In Laundry Soaps

Below are a few of the possible hundreds of various toxic chemicals that are present in detergents, soaps and fabric softeners. Please look into each of these and then compare them to the ingredients in your detergents you are currently using. Many companies will not give you a complete ingredient list, especially when they are using fragrances that could contain up to 100 synthetic chemicals that are designed for that specific scent.

It’s best to always use a fragrance free and dye free detergent at least.

  1. Dioxane (1,4 Dioxane/Diethylene Dioxide/Diethylene Ether/Dioxan) – super toxic and should not be used ever in your laundry. Known to cause cancer since 1988.
  2. Phosphates – linked to cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and death.
  3. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate & Sodium Laureth Sulfate/ Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLS/ SLES) – inflames the skin, eyes, lungs and can damage internal organs.
  4. NPE (nonylphenol ethoxylate) – harmful to eyes, skin, and lungs. NPE has been detected in human breast milk, blood, and urine and is associated with reproductive and developmental effects in rodents.
  5. Formaldehyderepeated exposure to formaldehyde can possibly lead to cancer.
  6. Chlorine Bleach – skin and lung irritant.
  7. Ammonium Sulphate – super toxic and is a category 3 toxin for oral, skin, and respiratory toxin.
  8. Benzyl Acetate – toxic and is a category 2 and 3 toxin skin corrosion/irritation, serious eye damage/eye irritation. Specifically targets organ toxicity (single exposure).
  9. Fragrances or Synthetic Chemical Perfumesvery toxic and can cause cancer and are endocrine disruptors causing hormone dysfunctions. Fragrance or “perfume” can consist of any of approximately 4,000 chemicals used by the fragrance industry to formulate scents for use in personal care products, laundry detergent, shampoos, cleaning products, perfumes, and home care products. Many fragrance chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, and other chronic health problems.
  10. Dyes – can cause skin irritation, rash, allergies, proven carcinogens and most are endocrine disruptors.
  11. Dichlorobenzene (P-Dichlorobenzene/ Benzene) – toxic to aquatic organisms, and is listed as carcinogenic warnings in humans.
  12. Ammonium Quaternary Sanitizers (Quats/ Synthesized Cationic Surfactants) – known to cause eye, skin, and lung damage, and is very corrosive.

All Natural Cleaning And Fabric Softening Agents

Over the years, I have replaced all of the toxic fragrant endocrine disrupting soaps, shampoos, conditioners, laundry detergents and fabric softeners in my house. It took me a while to find the right combination of all natural products that will replace the super toxic cleaning detergents and fabric softeners, I was using previously.

Here is my list of non toxic cleaning agents, and the non toxic fabric softener I use:

Sodium Bicarbonate

Cleans, disinfects and whitens the laundry and is an excellent way to soften the water with a high pH powder. I bought the aluminum free sodium bicarbonate at Costco for $7.49 for 13.5 pounds.

In a large cycle of clothes, I will use 1 large scoop or ½ cup in the washing machine.

Purchase Sodium Bicarbonate on Amazon.com

Duda Energy Pure Sodium Bicarbonate Powder

Borax

Borax is an excellent cleaner and has revolutionized cleaning with all-natural cleaning power that is not toxic for the environment and your laundry. Borax disinfects, cleans and whitens your laundry very well just by itself.

In a large cycle of clothes, I will use 1 large scoop or ½ cup in the washing machine.

Ozone Generating Machine

The ozone generating machine unit is hooked directly into the cold hose on your laundry machine. Now, all you have to do is use the cold water to clean and sanitize your laundry because the power of the 03 or ozone is taking the place of the hot water to break down the dirt and grime.

In Hawaii we use on demand hot water heaters and the propane here is very expensive, so you can save on hot water bills. The ozone really cleans and disinfects your laundry and saves you using 50 gallons of hot water on the wash and rinse cycle.

Newest Generation O3 Laundry System Washer

The unit I am using and experimenting with cost me $347.00.- on Amazon. It is easy to set up, and only takes about 5 minutes to install with just a pair of vice grips or pliers. They do make cheaper units, or if you are handy you can put together your own unit.

The best parts about using the ozone machine unit is that you can use more than 50% less detergents to clean your clothes! Remember, the ozone gas made by the machine uses only a small amount of electricity, and is the magical oxidizer for cleaning and sanitizing your laundry with only cold water.

O3 Pure Professional Eco Laundry Washer System Newest Generation

If you do not have the ozone machine hooked up to your laundry machine yet, you can always buy some Non Food Grade 3% H202 from Costco, and add a ¼ cup full in your laundry to help clean, sanitize and disinfect your laundry with the power or oxygen.

Do Ozone Laundry Systems Work?

We have found through testing, that ozone does work for removing stains from laundry through an oxidation mechanism, whereby ozone and an OH radical (a breakdown product from ozone and cold water) can both work as oxidants – src: The Science of Ozone Laundry Systems – WCP Online

Free and Clear

This detergent does not contain phosphates perfumes or dyes. I got this at Costco for $17.49 if you are using the ozone machine you can cut

In a large cycle of clothes, I will use about ¼ – ½ cup in the washing machine.

Purchase Kirkland Free and Clear on Amazon.com

Kirkland Ultra Clean Free and Clear

OxiClean

OxiClean is 100% chlorine, fragrance and dye free and works excellently to remove all kinds of stains. This is one of the best detergents to use if you do not have the ozone generator.

OxiClean uses oxygen to help clean your laundry just as the ozone machine machine produces 03 to clean your clothes. If you have an ozone generator then you can use up to 50% less detergents to clean your clothes.

In a large cycle of clothes I use 1 scoop or ¼-½ cup in the washing machine.

OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder, 7.22 lbs.

OxiClean Stain Fighter

White Vinegar

I use white vinegar to replace the toxic fabric softeners. Not only does this work great to soften your clothes, but on the rinse cycle when the vinegar is released, the vinegar will help remove all of the excess soap in your wash in the rinse cycle.

Remember, never use fragrances in any of your detergents or fabric softeners. The chemicals that make up the smells are endocrine disrupting chemicals and can cause serious problems with your hormonal regulation.

Lucy's Distilled White Vinegar

In a large cycle of clothes I fill up the fabric softener or bleach compartment with white vinegar instead of the toxic fabric softener or bleach in the washing machine.

The white vinegar will release in the rinse cycle. This will also help sanitize and remove the residual soap in your laundry.

Natural Distilled White Vinegar, 1 Gallon (128 oz)

This recipe for cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting the laundry works excellently and is inexpensive to buy.

Remember, we sleep in our sheets and wear our clothes for up to 8+ hours a day. Cleaning your clothes correctly without the use of toxic chemicals is a big win when we are looking into reducing the constant exposure of toxicity in our lives.

What Is The Most Toxic Laundry Detergent?

One of the most harmful chemicals found in laundry detergent is 1,4-Dioxane. This chemical, which is found in paints and varnishes, is found in leading brands of laundry detergent like Tide. The EPA considers this solvent a human carcinogen, and states: “1,4-Dioxane is used as a solvent.”

Is Laundry Detergent Actually Toxic | cleancult

I have tried most of the so called non toxic detergents on the market, and I don’t like the smell of most of them when I am finished with the wash, or when they dry.

If you use the ozone or H202 liquid oxygen, it will make your wash have an excellent clean smell and when the clothes are dried they smell clean without any soap or dirty smell.

The best gift I got myself lately was one of the ozone generating units for my washing machine.
