My Personal Daily Thyroid Protocols – Iodine is a trace mineral and is an essential fuel for the Thyroid and cellular function. The Thyroid is one of the the true “Master glands of the Body” because this tiny gland regulates and stimulates so many other biological functions for normal and healthy human development, for both males and females.

Iodine Deficiency Issues

Here are iodine deficiency statistics that may surprise you:

  • The National Health Nutritional Examination Survey reported that iodine levels have decreased by 50 percent in the last 30 years.
  • More than 96 percent of over 5,000 patients tested were iodine-deficient in a clinical study conducted by thyroid expert Dr. David Brownstein. (2)
    According to the WHO, iodine deficiency affects 72 percent of the world’s population.
  • The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the base of your neck. The thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormones, which primarily influence the metabolic rate and protein synthesis.

  • Sea Vegetables (have the largest amounts of iodine by far).
    • Kelp, 7 grams or ¼ oz., 3170mcg.
    • Alaria, 7 grams or ¼ oz., 1162mcg.
    • Dulse, 7 grams or ¼ oz., 1169mcg.
    • Laver, 7 grams or ¼ oz., 98mcg.
  • Potatoes, 1 medium, 60mcg.
  • Prunes, 5 whole, 13mcg.
  • Bananas, 1 medium, 3mcg.
  • Corn, ½ cup, 14 mcg.
  • Cranberries, 4 ounces, 400mcg.
  • Green beans, ½ cup, 3mcg.
  • Strawberries, 1 cup, 13 mcg.

As you can see the Seaweed Veggies are the highest amounts of iodine you can find in foods.

Iodine Deficiancy Among School Aged Children

Personally, I eat sea vegetables daily, and our Thyroid needs Iodine daily to function optimally. I add them to salads, hummus, breakfast teas, desserts etc.

I also use Lugol's Iodine Solution externally to add to the amount of iodine I receive daily. Lugol’s Iodine is a liquid made up of two parts potassium iodide for every one part elemental iodine in water.
