Alimentary Canal – The Tube of Life: Is from the mouth to the anus, and is over 30-35ft (9-10 meters) in length. So, we are going to tie together some vital concepts to understand and practice while chewing our foods. Chewing our foods and drinking liquids correctly is a must to learn and practice to support repairing the gut, and have excellent digestion and nutrition.

We will also touch on the diverse connections and understandings of the alimentary canal, and how each part works with the total digestion to elimination systems – this large tube is actually outside of our bodies.

The alimentary canal first starts with mastication, or chewing, which is the ignition and starting the process of digestion. The alimentary canal gives us all of our nutrition, and so many other essential related functions.

Our Immune Systems are directly related to our Gut Wall Flora Health.

Research states up to 90% of our immune system live in the alimentary canal. So, it is vital to understand that we are what we eat, drink, say, do and what lives in our intestinal tracts.

Related Vocabulary:

Digestive System: Responsible for breaking down food in the body to be used for energy.

Mouth: In the mouth, mechanical and chemical breakdown of food begins as the teeth rip and chew food and the saliva breaks it down chemically from the chief secretions of the Parotid glands.

Pharynx: Passage from the mouth to the larynx and esophagus.

Esophagus: a tube that connects the mouth with the stomach – Digestion does not occur in this organ.

Stomach: Approx. size of your fist. Mechanical and chemical breakdown of food continues in the stomach by means of both very acidic gastric juices, churning and moving the food.

Small intestine: Approx. 13-20ft long. Some digestion and most absorption of nutrients occurs in the small intestine. ‘Small” due to the diameter NOT length.

Large Intestine: Approx. 4 ft long – I call this the area of the intestine the “SEWAGE PIT”. Waste travels through the large intestine while mineral ions and water are absorbed back through the walls of the large intestine to return to the bloodstream. Large due to the larger diameter of the large intestine.

The Ileocecal Valve is the portal/sphincter and muscle that separates the small intestine and the large intestine. Its critical function is to limit the reflux of colonic contents back into the ileum or small intestine.

Approximately two liters of fluid enters the colon daily through the ileocecal valve.

The ileocecal valve is located between your umbilicus (belly button) and the top of your right hip. This area is very distinctive and necessary because it is the only site in the gastrointestinal tract that is used for Vitamin B12 and bile acid absorption.

Learning how to chew correctly, Rebuilding The Gut Wall Flora and drinking lots of pure water are some of the main tenants to repairing the intestines.

Through the 40 years of research and clinical practice with patients, I discovered that for most people this valve/sphincter does not function properly and is one of the major reasons for bowel toxicity and intestinal dysfunction.

Anus: Wastes are eliminated from the body through the anus.

The Lengths of the Mouth to Anus Tube:

  • Mouth: 3-4 inches
  • Esophagus: 10-12 inches
  • Stomach: 6-9 inches
  • Small Intestine: 15-25ft
  • Large Intestine: 4-5 ft
  • Anus: End of the digestive system.
